Top Home Hobby Ideas: Beginning Paper Crafts March 23, 2008
Posted by in : Kids Crafts , trackbackThere is no doubt about it. paper crafts are a very popular pastime right now. Scrapbooking is a fun way to display photos and chart family history. Other paper crafts include making greeting cards.
When starting out at paper crafts, it is easy to spend a great deal of money! Go easy in the beginning until you decide what sort of paper craft products and materials you are most likely to use. Forexample, you may learn you enjoy using stickers in scrapbooks, but rarely use rubber stamps. If this is the case, it would make sense to spend more on stickers and less on rubber stamps.
Almost everyone has some of their photographs kept in a shoe box or simply laying around in a drawer. Scrapbooks are the perfect solution to put those photos out where friends and family can appreciate them.
You need a loose leaf binder, some plastic page protectors, and some colored cardstock to get you started. Many paper crafts devotees will only buy archival quality materials. Always check as you buy. The majority of paper products, even the less expensive ones, are labeled “acid-free,” which indicates that they shouldn’t fade or otherwise deteriorate when kept for a long time. Sunlight will of course wash out nearly anything, but your paper crafts will not be out in the sunlight too often.
To begin a scrapbook there are several choices. You could select photos that all relate to a single happening, such as a birthday party or a Halloween party. This type of scrapbook will be short, but can be arranged around a theme. This is an excellent option if your photos are in some sort of order. If they are, then you may wish to pick 3 or 4 photos around a general theme, and change the theme for each page. You may want to include some double page spreads in your scrapbook.
Fix your photos to the cards with gluestick or double-sided tape squares. Then it’s time to decorate the page with stickers, paper shapes, or rubber stamped designs. Also, you could use a colored gel pen to write dates, names and any other relevant highlights relating to the activities in the photos.
Other materials are availableThese include die cuts, which are pieces of paper already cut into many interesting objects and shapes. You can also buy special scissors that cut paper with an appealing edge. A pair of shears referred to as “deckle” scissors is really useful for making interesting scrapbook pages, greeting cards, and other paper crafts. Or,if you also have a pair of pinking shears that are too blunt to cut through fabric, you could use those for cutting out shapes and photographs.
Many paper crafts enthusiasts start with scrapbooking, but then extend to designing their own greeting cards. These items do not have to include an original verse. A simple ”Birthday Greetings”, “Get Well Soon”, or even just “Hi” is enough to light up anyone’s day, so don’t fret about not being a witty enough writer to design your own greeting cards.
Rubber stamps often help to create delightful greeting cards. You can also add tiny beads, ribbons and other items to hand made cards. A handmade card is sure to thrill the recipient, whether or not they are intersted in paper crafts.
